If you’ve come to Wake in the Woods in the past, then you know they do things a bit differently than some of the other comps. They’re all about laid back, good times at the lake. The reason we all wakeboard is because it’s fun, no need to make it stressful. So if you’re looking for something a little bit different and a lot more fun, come check it out.

Go to wakeinthewoods.com for more info and pics.

hooters.jpgJuly’s featured rider is Ryan Webster, Ryan Webster has been on the scene wakeboarding for a few years and is always progressing, both himself and the sport. An eager rider who does it for the love of wakeboarding, Ryan makes residence in Delta, Utah where he lives on “The Res” with his family who are extremely supportive of not only his wakeboarding but the sport in general. I have been told that once “The Res” is thawed Ryan is out riding, as early as February, take a run off a dock start and finish with a clean run right back where he started.
Ryan competes at the Outlaw division in the IWA, and has placed in the top 3 at all Utah stops so far. The level of intensity that Ryan rides with is hard to match, and if his success is any indicator, Ryan will be going places in wakeboarding.
Dewey and I had the opportunity to go down to Delta recently and install the coolest rail we had in Ryan’s back yard. Ryan admitted that he hasn’t hit rails much, and this beast would lend lots of practice time, but only after a few hits on the 60 footer, Ryan was sliding the whole thing, spinning 180’s and gapping the top like he had been doing it all season.

Name - Ryan Webster
Age -20
Sponsors - Hyperlite, Marine Products, MOM and DAD
Board Set Up - Hyperlite Pulse with Byerly bindings
Hobbies other than wake sports - Duck hunting with my dog Whiskey
Biggest Accomplishments - Associates Degree, 2006 IWA Overall
Goals this Season - Consistently land toe and heel 7’s, crow mobe
Favorite Pro and Local Riders - Pro: AJ Racinelli, Rusty Malinoski. Local: Where to start? Colby Shelton, Mark Glover, Andrew Wallace, Kayden Tomlinson, Braxton Tomlinson, Colton Brockbank, Scott Bagley, Tyler Peterson, Bret Peterson.
Favorite Trick to watch and perform - Huge KGB
What is it about wakeboarding? - I owe it all to my parents to getting me into the sport, they support me in all I do. Wakeboarding is an escape from reality. When I am on the lake it is like time stops, haha and ask Colby Shelton or Andrew Wallace, I am in my own dream world when I am out on the boat. For me, wakeboarding is not about the contests or the moves you can throw, it is a way of life and sharing the sport with other people I think about wakeboarding more than anything else, it’s what gets me through the day.
What do you like about the local scene? - All the riders get along and help push each other to learn new things, the number one most important thing that I like is the fact that we are all friends out there and love doing the same thing. I like how Dewey has been helping Utah get into the wakeboard scene. He has already made a huge impact on Utah riders with rail/winch riding.
Who do you ride with? - I ride with just about anybody who is down, but on a normal day I ride by myself sad, huh? Where is the love?

If you got a chance to check out today’s Deseret News you probably read the section on ‘Boat Basics‘ and I am sure you saw the great picture on how to not do a Railey, by yours truly! So I figured I would take this chance to talk a little about the Air Railey. Someone just this week was talking to me about how the only time a picture like this should show up in a publication, would be when showing how to not do an Air Railey. It is time that we bring back the fun of an Air Railey. When doing a Railey your arms and legs should be strait with your shoulders square to the boat. Sure there are a number of variations to the Raily but one variation that you want the stay away from is what you see to the right, better know as a Star-Gazed Railey. To keep yourself from getting Star-Gazed make sure you start with a progressive edge/cut and hold it all the way up the wake. Coming off your edge too soon is what leads to a Star-Gazed Railey.

2008 Wake in the Snake Wakeboard Competition

It might be the lock ness monster or it could be Dewey’s and OMJ’s new project.  Look out for this guy cause he is out there taking names.  More to come.

One of our major expenses today is gas so I have done a little research to help save money on gas and get better mpg.

Maintain your vehicle

  1. A vehicle that runs smoothly uses less gas than one that is poorly maintained. Regular oil changes, air filter and other recommended maintenance will all help to give you a fuel-efficient vehicle.
  2. Keep your tires inflated.
  3. Remove excess weight.
  4. Get the right octane for your car. Because of Utah’s higher altitude the air is thinner so you have less volumetric efficiency so you might be able to get away with using lower octane.

How to drive

  1. Minimize idling.
  2. Drive the speed limit or a constant speed.
  3. Use higher gears.
  4. Roll up windows on highway. It creates a strong drag witch will give you worse fuel economy then your ac.
  5. Park in the shade. Hot cars evaporate gas.
  6. accelerate and brake easier
  7. Avoid rush hour
  8. Choose an exit with several gas stations for competitive prices.

When to buy gas

  1. Some people believe that buying gas during the coolest times is best because the gas is denser but most gas is stored in underground tanks where the temp will not change much.
  2. It is best to buy gas Thursday before 10 a.m. because weekend demand for gas is high, so prices start going up for the weekend.

Gas deals

  1. Get a gas card. You can save % on gas with a holiday loyalty card or discover gas card. (Apply for the Discover® Open Road Card today! link goes direct to application)

  2. Get cheaper gas at costco/sams club
  3. Smith’s fuel stations give deals when you purchase groceries.
  4. Chrysler Dodge Jeep 2.99 gas guarantee.

Last spring WakeUtah.com went through an overhaul, things were said, agreements were made, and people got involved! You have all seen the changes we have been making, improving the site, finding deals for us poor wakeboarders, and being the best source of information about what is happening in the wakeboarding world in Utah. Those are the things you have seen so far, we have some things in the works that will bring our community of wakeboarders together.

Part of the change is the merchandise section provided in part by Zazzle.com, where you can find some sweet wakeutah.com shirts, hats and mugs. We went with Zazzle.com because of the ability given to the customer, that’s you, to customize the shirt to your liking! You can move the wakeutah.com logo around the front, put in on the chest pocket area or delete it all together. Once you have your design, you can change the type of shirt, maybe you want it as a hoodie, or a sweater, it’s all good! You may have seen Dewey and I at the meet up events, practice runs, and IWA competitions in our stylish shirts.

The images on the back were taken from photos I took over the past few years attending events such as the Wake In the Snake of 2007, Deweys Rail Jam of 2007, and the Liquid Force Slider Show of 2006. Recently we released the first local rider edition t-shirt, the Marc Glover Edition. Marc was our featured rider for June, and in honor of his accomplishments I asked for a photo that I could use to put him on the shirt. He provided a picture of him kicking some mad air, railey style. After hours of working my magic, he is now on a shirt.

So I figured, why not offer this to others who have a killer profile shot of them doing a sick move, like Marc’s railey, and put it on a shirt at Zazzle.com! That is the game plan, if you have a picture, you think would look great on a WakeUtah.com shirt, email me, omj@wakeutah.com, and I will work some magic and create your own edition of the WakeUtah.com t-shirt!

Why spend hours searching the internet for the best deals on wake products, when you can see them all here on our ‘Shopping Deals‘ Page. On the ‘Shopping Deals‘ Page you will find ‘Deal of the Day’ products, links to online retailers and a bunch of coupon codes.

As we where heading down to our practice sessions last Friday we made a quick stop off at American Fork Harbor to take a pull behind the new Super Air Nautique 230 with some of the guys from Croft Marine. If you have not taken a look at the new Air Nautique’s I recommended it. The new interior design has a lot to offer. Starting with the walk through swim platform all the way up to the play pen style bow. The next thing you notice is the ton of storage room and the numerous seating configurations. I like how you can can set up a lot of rear face seating. As Dewey jumped in the water to take a session behind the fully weighted down Nautique I took the wheel. As I hit the throttle the boat quickly got up to plane and the ‘Zero-Off‘ GPS cruise control took over. I was impressed with how well the Zero-Off held the speed with very little change. After playing with everything inside the boat I was excited to take the wake for a spin. I have ridden behind Air Natiques in the past as was expecting to get the same steep wakes that I had seen before, but this was not the case. The wake still has a ton of girth to it (even in Utah Lakes 5ft of water), but the new Nautique throws a clean wake with enough transition to be a comfortable launch pad for any level of rider. The real test would be to see how this wake shapes out in deeper water.

Overall you will find that the new Air Nautique has a lot to offer, and despite this being the first year Croft Marine has carried Nautique, they are very knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions you can throw at them. Don’t take my word for it, head down to Croft Marine and check one out for yourself. Croft will be out at American Fork Harbor a few Fridays this summer giving a pull to whomever is interested. Also make sure to keep an eye on WakeUtah for a chance to ride behind the new Nautique during a meet up session in the near future.
